September has arrived and that means it’s time for one of the biggest festivals of the year in Northwest Indiana–Popcorn Festival. The day of the festival is full of fun, but the week leading up to the big day features activities for families as well.

Starting on Sept. 3, the Orville Redenbacher Tent at Central Park Plaza will feature lunches by local restaurants and dinners benefiting different local nonprofits including the Valparaiso Band Parents Association, the NWI School Nutrition Association Chapter 25 and the Valparaiso Kiwanis Club. Restaurants providing lunches include Pesto’s, Strongbow Inn, Kelsey’s Steakhouse and Billy Jack’s Cafe. All meals are available for carryout as well.

On Sept. 7, the day of the festival, vendor booths open at 7 a.m., with the Popcorn Panic 5K Walk/5M Run starting at the same time. The Kid’s Poppin Play Place also opens at 7 a.m., featuring inflatables and games, with the Lit’l Kernel Puff Race for kids ages 2-9 starting at 8:45 a.m. (pre-registration is required). The parade begins at 10 a.m., featuring fantastic floats decorated with popcorn, with the food tent and Main Stage Beer Garden opening at 11 a.m. The Front Porch Music stage, which opens at noon, features students from the Garage Band 101 course at Front Porch Music in addition to other local musicians. Main Stage entertainment begins at noon as well with Highway Band, followed by Lupriphonic at 1:35 p.m., Crawpuppies at 3:10 and headliners the Gin Blossoms at 5 p.m. The entire festival ends at 6:30 p.m.
